UN Country Team Leadership Course in Bonn Strengthens Leadership on UN Country-Level Operations

“What the UN is, what it is intended for, what its legitimacy is based on and what it is supposed to do.”

Bonn, Germany

October 2025

From September 15–19 and October 20–24, 2025, two editions of the UN Country Team Leadership Course, organized by the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) in Bonn, brought together Resident Coordinators, UN Representatives, and Heads of Agencies at the country level for an intensive five-day program on leading as One UN in complex country contexts. Through simulations, case-based exercises and peer learning, participants focused on applying UN reforms, aligning financing with country priorities, and strengthening collective leadership of UN Country Teams to deliver coherent results on the ground. As part of the course, participants received The UN at Country Level: A Practical Guide to the United Nations Operational System in hard copy. The handbook, which explains in clear and accessible terms how the UN operates in practice at country level—including mandates, structures, funding and coordination among UN entities—serves as a practical reference that participants can share with governments, donors and other partners to support a common understanding of how the UN works in-country and how to engage with it more effectively.
